Getting an offer from a UK university is an exciting moment, but there is still an important step before you can begin your studies. If you are an international student who needs immigration permission to study in the UK, you will usually need to apply for a UK student visa.
The UK student visa process is straightforward when you know what is expected. The challenge is making sure that your application, documents, finances and timings all line up correctly.
Here is a practical guide to help you understand the process from start to finish.
Step 1: Check Whether You Need a Student Visa
Before starting a UK student visa application, check that the Student route is the right immigration route for your course and circumstances.
You will generally need a Student visa if you are aged 16 or over and want to study a qualifying course with a licensed student sponsor. You must have an unconditional offer from your education provider and meet the relevant requirements for the route.
The Student route has replaced the former Tier 4 General Student visa.
It is also worth checking whether you can bring dependants, whether you need an ATAS certificate and whether you require a tuberculosis test before beginning your application.
Step 2: Apply to a UK University
Your UK student visa application comes after your university application, not before it.
First, choose a suitable course and apply to an institution licensed to sponsor international students. Once your application has been accepted and you have met any conditions attached to your offer, the university can issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Your CAS contains important information about your course and sponsorship. You will need the CAS reference number when completing your visa application.
Check the details carefully when you receive your CAS. If your name, passport details, course information or other important information is incorrect, contact your university before submitting your visa application.
Step 3: Check the Student Visa UK Requirements
This is where preparation really matters.
The student visa UK requirements can vary depending on your circumstances, but you will generally need:
- A valid passport or other accepted travel document
- Your CAS from your education provider
- Evidence of sufficient funds where required
- Evidence of English language ability where required
- A valid ATAS certificate if your course and nationality require one
- A tuberculosis test certificate if applicable
- Additional documents relevant to your circumstances
GOV.UK confirms that applicants may need to provide evidence of funds, ATAS certification, TB test results, or sponsorship documents, depending on their circumstances.
Do not assume that having a university offer automatically means your visa will be approved. Your immigration application needs to meet the Student route requirements separately.
Step 4: Prepare Your Financial Evidence
One of the areas where students can make avoidable mistakes is financial evidence.
Where you are required to demonstrate funds, you need to show enough money to cover your outstanding course fees, as stated on your CAS, as well as your required living costs.
For applications under the current rules, the living cost requirement is:
£1,529 per month in London, for up to nine months.
£1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months.
The amount you need to demonstrate can depend on your circumstances, and there are exemptions from the financial evidence requirement.
Make sure your financial documents meet the required format and holding period. Having enough money in an account is not necessarily enough if the evidence does not satisfy the immigration rules.
Step 5: Check Whether You Need a TB Test
Some applicants must provide a tuberculosis certificate as part of their UK student visa application.
This generally applies if you are coming to the UK for more than six months and have lived in a country listed by the Home Office for six months or more, including a period within the six months before your application.
If you need a test, it must be completed at a clinic approved by the Home Office. The certificate is generally valid for six months from the date of the chest X-ray.
Check this early rather than leaving it until the final stages of your application.
Step 6: Complete Your UK Student Visa Application
Once your documents are ready, you can complete your application online.
If you are applying from outside the UK, you can normally apply up to six months before the start of your course. You will need to provide your personal details, passport information, CAS details and information about your circumstances.
You will also need to pay the relevant student visa fee in the UK.
As of 8 April 2026, the Student visa application fee is £558 for applications made either outside or inside the UK. The fee applies to each applicant.
The UK study visa fees are separate from other application costs, so make sure you budget accordingly.
Step 7: Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge
The student visa fee UK is not the only immigration cost you need to consider.
Most students staying in the UK for more than 6 months will also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
The total amount depends on the length of immigration permission granted.
When calculating your overall UK study visa fees, remember to account for the application fee, the IHS, and any other costs that apply to your circumstances.
Step 8: Prove Your Identity and Give Biometrics
After submitting your application, you need to provide proof of your identity.
Depending on your nationality and circumstances, you may be asked to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph. GOV.UK will tell you which process applies to you.
If you are required to attend an appointment, take the documents requested by the visa application centre and follow the instructions provided after completing your online application.
Step 9: Wait for the Decision
If you apply from outside the UK, you will usually receive a decision within three weeks.
Applications made from inside the UK usually take up to eight weeks. In some circumstances, faster processing services may be available for an additional fee.
Avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements based solely on your expectation of receiving a visa by a particular date.
Once your application is successful, you will receive an eVisa showing your immigration status. You will need a UKVI account to access it.

- Your CAS information matches your passport
