However, the rules are changing. From 1 January 2027, most graduates applying for the Graduate Route will receive 18 months of permission rather than two years. PhD and other doctoral graduates will continue to receive three years.

The Graduate Route visa is a post-study immigration route for international students who complete an eligible course in the UK.
Unlike the Skilled Worker route, you do not need a job offer or an employer willing to sponsor you when you apply. The route is unsponsored, which means you can use the period after your studies to look for suitable work and gain experience.

Who Can Apply for the Graduate Route?
There are several requirements you need to meet before applying for the Graduate Route visa.
You must:
- Be in the UK when you apply
- Hold a current Student visa or have last held permission as a Student
- Have completed an eligible course in the UK
- Have studied with an eligible education provider
- Have your university or education provider confirm your successful course completion to the Home Office
- Meet the relevant immigration and suitability requirements
Your course will usually need to be a UK Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or doctorate, although certain other qualifications can also qualify. The education provider must also be a licensed student sponsor with a track record of compliance.
It is important not to assume that every course automatically qualifies. If you are unsure whether your qualification meets the requirements, check your eligibility before making plans around a post-study work visa.
How Long Can You Stay After Studying?
The length of your Graduate Route visa depends on when you apply and the qualification you have completed.
For Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates:
- Applications made on or before 31 December 2026 can currently lead to two years of permission.
- Applications made on or after 1 January 2027 will receive 18 months of permission.
For PhD and other doctoral graduates, the Graduate visa continues to provide three years of permission.
This change is worth keeping in mind if you are currently studying in the UK or planning your course timeline. The date you submit your application matters.
The post-study work permit in the UK is not extendable. If you want to remain in the country after your Graduate visa expires, you will normally need to move to another immigration route if you qualify.
What Can You Do on a Graduate Visa?
One of the biggest advantages of the Graduate Route visa is the flexibility it provides.
You can generally:
- Work in most roles
- Look for employment
- Change employers
- Work on a temporary or permanent basis
- Be self-employed

There are some restrictions. For example, you cannot work as a professional sportsperson, and you generally cannot access public funds. The route also has specific rules around further study.
How Do You Apply for the Graduate Route Visa?
The Graduate Route visa application must be made online while you are in the UK.
You do not have to wait for your graduation ceremony or for your physical degree certificate. Your university must first notify the Home Office that you have completed your course. Once this has happened, you can make your application before your current Student visa expires.
You will need to prove your identity and provide the documents requested during the application. Depending on your circumstances, this may involve using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attending an appointment to provide biometric information.
The current application fee is £937, and an Immigration Health Surcharge is also payable. The exact amount can depend on the length of permission granted. GOV.UK currently states that the Immigration Health Surcharge is usually £1,035 per year of permission.
Applications are usually decided within eight weeks.
What Happens After the Graduate Route Visa?
The Graduate Route visa is designed as a temporary route. It cannot simply be extended when it expires.
For many graduates, the next step may be the Skilled Worker route. You need to meet the relevant requirements, including having an eligible job with an approved sponsor and meeting the applicable salary requirements.
This is why it is sensible to start thinking about your longer-term options before your Graduate visa ends. You may have several possible routes depending on your career, qualifications, employer and personal circumstances.
For graduates moving into healthcare, for example, other immigration options may be available. GOV.UK specifically advises doctors, nurses and other eligible health and social care professionals to consider the Health and Care Worker route where appropriate.
