Better weather might be part of the appeal, but career opportunities, higher earning potential in certain professions and the chance to experience a different way of life are equally good reasons to consider the move.
But if you are seriously thinking about moving to Australia from the UK, there is a little more to it than finding a job, packing your belongings and boarding a flight.
You need the right Australian visa, and depending on your profession, you may also need a skills assessment or Australian professional registration. Your age, qualifications, occupation, work experience and whether you already have an Australian employer can all affect the route available to you.
So, how can you migrate to Australia from the UK? Here is where to start.
Can UK Citizens Move to Australia?
Yes, but being a UK citizen does not automatically give you the right to live or work in Australia.
If you want to move to Australia permanently, work there or build a long-term career, you will need to find a visa that fits your circumstances.
The good news is that Australia has several migration routes for skilled workers. Which one makes sense for you depends largely on why you are moving.
A young person looking to spend a couple of years working and travelling will have very different options from an experienced nurse, physiotherapist or occupational therapist planning a permanent relocation.
What Visa Do I Need to Move to Australia from the UK?
This is usually the biggest question for anyone researching how to move to Australia from the UK.
There is no single “UK to Australia visa”. Instead, Australia offers several visa subclasses.
Skilled Independent Visa, Subclass 189
The Skilled Independent visa is a permanent skilled migration option that does not require nomination by an Australian state, territory or employer.
You first need to check whether your occupation is eligible and submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
Australia uses a points system for skilled migration. For the subclass 189, 190 and 491 routes, the minimum threshold is currently 65 points. Points can be awarded for factors including age, work experience, qualifications and English language ability. Meeting 65 points does not guarantee an invitation.
Skilled Nominated Visa, Subclass 190
Another option for Australia skilled migration is the Skilled Nominated visa.
This is also a permanent visa, but you need nomination from an Australian state or territory government.
Individual states and territories have their own priorities and nomination requirements, so where you are willing to live can become an important part of your migration strategy.
Skilled Work Regional Visa, Subclass 491
If you are open to living outside Australia’s largest metropolitan areas, the subclass 491 may be worth considering.
It is a provisional regional visa and is also part of the SkillSelect system. Regional migration can sometimes open opportunities that may not be available through other skilled pathways.
For all three routes, you need to submit an Expression of Interest before you can be invited to apply.
Employer-Sponsored Visas
You do not necessarily have to tackle moving to Australia from the UK entirely on your own.
An Australian employer may be able to sponsor you.
The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, allows approved employers to sponsor suitably skilled overseas workers where they cannot find an appropriately skilled Australian worker. The visa can allow a stay of up to four years, depending on the stream and circumstances.
For eligible skilled workers, employer sponsorship can also lead to permanent options. The Employer Nomination Scheme, subclass 186, allows eligible workers nominated by employers to live and work permanently in Australia.
For healthcare professionals in particular, finding an employer willing to support the move can make the overall journey much easier to understand.
Working Holiday Visa
If you are younger and not ready to commit to permanent migration, there is another route worth knowing about.
The Working Holiday visa, subclass 417, allows eligible young adults to have an extended holiday in Australia while working to fund their stay. The standard age range is 18 to 30, but the upper limit is 35 for passport holders from certain countries, including the UK.
This route is very different from permanent skilled migration, but it can suit someone who wants to experience Australian life before deciding whether to stay longer.
How to Move to Australia from the UK Step by Step
Once you get past the various visa names, the process becomes easier to follow.
Your first job is to work out why you are moving. Are you looking for permanent residency, an employer-sponsored career move or a couple of years abroad?
Next, check whether your occupation is eligible for the visa you are considering. Australia’s skilled occupation lists determine which occupations can access particular skilled migration programmes.
If your visa requires it, you may then need a formal skills assessment. Healthcare professionals may have an additional requirement because many professions are regulated in Australia. Nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals should therefore check the Australian registration requirements for their specific profession before accepting a job.
For points-tested visas, the next stage is usually submitting an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. If invited, you currently have 60 days to submit the corresponding visa application.
Employer-sponsored applicants follow a different process because an eligible employer needs to nominate or sponsor them.
Whatever route you take, expect to provide evidence supporting your identity, qualifications, employment history and other eligibility requirements.
Is It Easier to Move to Australia If You Work in Healthcare?
Healthcare professionals have a particularly interesting reason to look at working in Australia from the UK.
Jobs and Skills Australia’s 2025 Occupation Shortage List found that shortages remain concentrated in several areas, particularly health, education and construction. Earlier shortage analysis also identified health professionals among Australia’s most undersupplied occupational groups.
That does not mean all healthcare worker automatically qualifies for an Australian visa.
You still need to meet immigration requirements and, where applicable, professional registration standards. However, experienced nurses and allied health professionals may find that their skills align with areas where Australian employers continue to recruit.

Think about salary alongside housing costs, transport and your preferred lifestyle rather than comparing UK and Australian salaries on exchange rate alone.
Healthcare is another consideration. The UK and Australia have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, but your access to Medicare depends on your circumstances and does not necessarily replace the need to understand what healthcare cover you will have after relocating.
You should also think about taxation, pensions or superannuation, what happens to any property you retain in Britain, and your UK tax position before leaving.
